First B2 press for Callprint

Callprint, a high quality reprographics and print service provider with 23 outlets covering London and the South East, the Midlands and South West, has invested in its first B2 litho press - a Ryobi 755 with coater and IR dryer. The machine has been installed at Callprint's Birmingham production centre, replacing two Heidelberg DI presses. The press and associated Screen 4300 computer-to-plate device were purchased from Apex Digital Graphics.

Director Fabian Porter says: "We were actually very close to signing for a Heidelberg Anicolor press, but then the Ryobi presses came to our attention. Initially we examined the potential of the small-footprint B2 Ryobi 784E machine, but having digested the competitive pricing offered by Apex, we decided that the Ryobi 750 Series machine would give us even better potential for expanding the business. The B2 format certainly opens many more doors for us."

"The 755's configuration gives us great flexibility. The five printing units mean that we can accommodate a special colour, and the inline coating system allows us to include special decorative coatings or just a sealer to help turn the work around quickly. The other Callprint outlets send through their longer run jobs to us and we produce the work on the Ryobi."

Established in 1992, Callprint's original market was focused on architectural, engineering and construction sector customers, but has grown from there to encompass a wide range of high quality, fast turnaround print from all major business centres. The business is wholly owned by Callprint Group Ltd, which has a turnover in excess of £15 million. "The success of Callprint has been based on establishing a good reputation for producing high quality work delivered on time," said Fabian Porter.

Apex came in for praise for the efforts put in to the installation of the machine. "We are situated on Queensway in Birmingham, and the only access to our building is through the front. We discussed with the local council – a customer of ours – what we could do with regard to closing the road. They were very helpful and advised us of some imminent roadworks, when Queensway would have to be closed overnight anyway. We discussed this with Apex and they were able to adjust the delivery schedule to fit. The transport team rolled up on time, we removed the glass frontage to our building, and the press, in three sections, was duly installed. It was a busy night!"

The Callprint business has a strong focus on environmental issues, and this area was fully investigated with regard to this purchase decision. The processless Screen 4300 CtP system uses no chemistry, and images onto fully recyclable aluminium printing plates, whilst the Ryobi press offers one of the lowest power consumption rates of all B2 format machines.

The Ryobi 755 at Callprint offers a printing area of 765 x 545mm. It handles stocks from 0.04mm to 0.8mm at speeds of up to 15,000 sph, with up to five colours and inline coating. The Callprint machine is equipped with an infra-red dryer and semi-automatic plate changing, plus ink volume setter software, helping the operator get to good colour quickly; and an auto print density control system to measure the colour bar and automatically set colour densities to match the control sheet.
